Mountain Goats - Threats in the Wild

Mountain Goats are currently not in danger, yet they face a lot of threats in the wild and their population is vulnerable to many factors. Kids and yearlings seem to suffer the most from predators such as lynx cats, wolves, wolverines, and others. These predators attack the yearlings along the timberline yet they have few chances to hunt them along the very steep slopes. However, the high elevations cannot stop the golden eagle from hunting the Mountain Goat. Therefore, many kids and yearlings fall victim to this natural predator.

Human activities also impact the species. Thus, many hunters cannot distinguish between males and females and kill females leaving the kids without mothers. Moreover, mines, road construction, and other activities contribute greatly to Mountain Goat habitat loss.

It should be said that any impact on the species devastates the population, as the Mountain Goat is slow to reproduce in comparison to other hoofed animals. Their litters are small with one kid in a litter occurring as the most common. Nowadays, the Mountain Goat population approximates 40,000-100,000 species.

Many Mountain Goats are found in parks. They are introduced to the parks from the areas where they are originally found. Much has to be done, yet, to preserve the species in the wild by reducing the human impact on the habitat where Mountain Goats feel the happiest.
